Students in Mrs. Karnes’ GT/Enrichment class recently participated in the Maine STEM Film Challenge, showcasing both their creativity and scientific understanding. Although they were introduced to the competition later in the year, the class quickly embraced the opportunity.
The project began when Quinn sparked an idea inspired by the label on a water bottle she was drinking. This curiosity led the group to explore the concept of osmosis. From there, students conducted research, designed an experiment using gummy bears, and developed a clear and engaging script to explain their findings.
The final result was an impressive informational video about osmosis. The film features creative elements such as stop-motion and GIFs to help illustrate key concepts, making the science both accessible and engaging. If you haven’t seen it yet, we encourage you to watch it on our YouTube channel, it’s both educational and exceptionally well done!
The video was submitted to the Maine STEM Film Challenge in February. In late March, judges hosted a Zoom session to review submissions and announce winners. After receiving their official results and watching the recording together, the class had exciting news to celebrate. Check out the video of them receiving this news on the Facebook page!
Mrs. Karnes’ students earned two awards:
First Place in the 4th/5th grade division
Content and Research Excellence Award
Congratulations to Mrs. Karnes and her talented class of students pictured above on this outstanding achievement!
